In order to reduce shadows cast on uneven surfaces, the use of two-sided dark field lighting is recommended. For particularly demanding lighting tasks, darkfield illumination can be equipped with a polarizer. See: Illumination Examples

To inspect and monitor metallic surfaces, a lighting setup is required that directs light into the camera under specular conditions. There are essentially two configurations for this.

• The light source is positioned at the same angle as the camera's line of sight. This ensures that the angle of incidence equals the angle of reflection, thereby satisfying the specular condition. Angles of +/-7 degrees are common for both the light source and the camera.
• Coaxial illumination, which is also shown on this page.

Transparent and semi-transparent materials are viewed using transmitted light. With other types of illumination, the materials would otherwise appear black.
Transmitted light illumination is also used to inspect coatings on transparent substrates. Technically, the same illumination modules are used as in bright-field illumination.
For materials that are both transparent and non-transparent, transmitted light illumination is combined with dark-field illumination. In transmitted light, inclusions in transparent materials and defects in coatings can thus be reliably detected.

The combination lighting system combines the technical advantages of various lighting concepts into a single product. These include dark-field, bright-field, and tunnel lighting. These lighting types can be equipped with different LED colors and controlled separately. Especially on difficult surfaces, an optimal result can be achieved by adjusting the various lighting components.
